Literature Text

one plus one is two,
but me plus you equals crying,
slamming doors and regrets that
pound on the walls of the mind
until the day we both break.

i’ll be the rhythm you dance to
in the middle of the meadow,
you be the beat, the bruises left
on skinny thighs and black-burned collarbones.
i buckled down and forced myself to write. i'm really sorry to all of you who are expecting more out of me. i'm expecting more out of me too.

anyways, this is a very personal poem. i doubt many people will get the actual meaning, but of course my poems are always up to interpretation. i'm not going to tell you what you have to think my poems mean, that wouldn't make it very fun for anyone.

so i'm sitting here with a cat in my lap and seriously it makes me to happy. i have a living thing sitting on me. i mean, whoa.

This is such a heartbreaking poem. To me, the first stanza kind of hints at psychological abuse ('pound on the walls of the mind'), whereas the last stanza seems to hint at physical abuse ('you be the beat, the bruises left / on skinny thighs and black-burned collarbones.'). I think the last two lines in particular have a lot of impact, and in some ways this doesn't seem to hint at physical abuse by another person exactly, but more what the person drove the narrator to do to themselves instead.

Powerfully written.
